Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for the Visual Arts

The College Art Association (CAA) offers an analysis on what constitutes Copyright and Fair Use in art making. Understanding this code is critical for artists who want to use another work in a transformative way; that is, not to copy a work but to use another work in one's own art for the purposes of satire, commentary, or any other way that gives the work new meaning.

Teaching Tools on Fair Use

College Art Association offers materials for teachers and students on the definitions and applications of Fair Use and transformative works.

"These materials were developed to assist professors of studio art, art history, design history, and museum studies in teaching their students about the US copyright doctrine of fair use, which allows certain uses of copyrighted materials without seeking permission from copyright holders."
