Encyclopedias are a great place to get background information, definitions, and basic facts.

In order to access the Library electronic materials (books, journals and databases) when you are outside the library, go to MyUTampa and enter your Spartans Domain user name and password. Offers the complete Encyclopedia Britannica online as well as Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and Thesaurus.
Gale eBooks
Comprises a wide variety of ebooks on topics such as the arts, education, law, medicine, and religion.
Oxford Reference
Access all Oxford's dictionaries, companions, and encyclopedias in one place.
Oxford Reference is a multi-disciplinary database that features a range of short entries, timelines, quotations, and lengthy in-depth reference articles on all topics. Browse by subject or enter a keyword in the search box.

Merck Index
Comprehensive reference database for those researching chemicals, drugs, and biologicals.
Includes monographs and historical records along with structure search, reference tables, and named reactions.
