Banned Books Week, Sept. 22 - 28

by Leslie Vega on 2024-09-11T11:21:00-04:00 in Macdonald-Kelce Library | 0 Comments

American schools have been pressured to ban books in the classroom and in libraries for longer than you may think. Depending on the prejudices of the day, people have protested books for being "unchristian" or "filthy," "violent" or "sexually explicit." Currently, certain parental, administrative, and political groups have targeted transgender and queer materials from being distributed. Unfortunately, Florida is ground zero for this type of censorship, as you can see from the map below.

Censoship has skyrocketed since 2020. Interested? Read more about why at Banned Books Week and the American Library Association

The Macdonald-Kelce Library features many of these banned titles in our first-floor display. Take a look, see how many you have read already, and borrow the ones you haven't. Many of them are YA literature, and that's always fun to read!
