July 7, 1958: On this date in UT History-McKay & Smiley Halls Groundbreaking

Yesterday, July 7th, marked the 66th anniversary of the groundbreaking for both McKay and Smiley Dorms in 1958. Prior to their completion, students who resided on campus, lived in Plant Hall. McKay and Smiley were the first dorms built at UT. President Nance first began raising money for the project in 1956 and the buildings finally opened to students for the fall semester of 1959. Simply called the men's (Smiley) and women's (McKay) dorms, the two were officially named in the spring of 1961. If you're a current student residing in either dorm, congratulations! You live in the third oldest habitable structures on campus!
