Finding Financials

Public charities and private foundations must file a 990/990-PF with the IRS every year in order to keep their tax exempt status. These filings include an accounting how much the charity raised and how they used their money. It also includes compensation information for the highest paid employees.

Several resources provide access to these filings:

ProPublica-Nonprofit Explorer
Use this database to view summaries of 3 million tax returns from tax-exempt organizations and see financial details such as their executive compensation and revenue and expenses. You can browse IRS data released since 2013 and access more than 14 million tax filing documents going back as far as 2001.
990 Finder- The Foundation Center
This source allows for searching of nonprofit filings in the US.
Candid-The Guidestar National Database of Nonprofit Organizations
Requires free registration. The Foundation Center located in the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh's Oakland Main branch has a Premiere Level subscription to Guide Star.
