Disability Studies

A guide to the interdisciplinary academic field of disability studies.

What is Disability Studies?

Disability Studies is an interdisciplinary area of study based in the humanities and social sciences that views disability in the context of culture, society, and politics (Encyclopedia Britannica). This discipline incorporates traditional medical research with other areas of study to explore the way disability is viewed and treated through societal attitudes: understanding disability shapes the way we work, how we create, form policies, and generally interact with others in a diverse society.

Disability Studies burgeoned from the disability rights movement along side other twentieth century advocate movements of civil rights, women's rights, and LGTBQIA+ rights. Employment equity and anti-discrimination efforts are major touchstones of the movement.
