AI in the Library

GenAI or General AI is the use of Large Language Models (LLM) trained and enormous sets of data to simulate human intelligence and fluent language text. Specialized AI are versions that exist in proprietary databases to obtain only verifiable sources.

GenAI can be clever, use caution Verify sources. AI is known to hallucinate or create hypothetical references.  OpenAI and most all GenAI (free and paid) can only access free open internet sources. It cannot access content within paid databases. Sources tend to be old. Some prompts to AI can elicit biased answers and/or the model may possess bias. AI presents powerful strengths GenAI may be great for dreaming up creative ideas and generating a starter framework to explore more research. The library offers some specialized AI that can search within our databases generating 100% valid current sources. Google, Grammarly and other vendors are actively using AI Responsible, ethical, and thoughtful use of AI can become a powerful asset

• Using GenAI to produce sections of an assignment or a complete assignment violates the Academic Integrity Policy.
• Review your professor's syllabus and other student policy sources.
• Many faculty use Turn-It-In and other means to detect works not created by students.

• Brainstorming and refining ideas
• Fine-tuning research questions
• Drafting an outline
• Checking grammar, syntax, and style
• Creating visual materials for a presentation (cite it)

Follow the Journal to the Year, Volume, Issue and article title.

• You're a quiz master for an upper division marketing program. Generate quiz questions with three choices and prompt the user to answer A, B, or C. If they guess correctly, say "Congratulations!" and prompt the next question. If they guess incorrectly, allow one more try. If they miss again, tell them the answer, then offer the next question. Sightly increase the difficulty whenever they get three questions correct. Score 25 questions and end the quiz. If you understand, say "Are you ready to begin the 25 question marketing quiz?". Randomize the answer choices so that A isn't usually correct.​

• Generate a list of the top ten small food vendors in the Tampa Bay region. Include the name of the company, website, address, approximate market size, and any financial information publically listed. Include relevant source information. Do not include any hypothetical data.

• Develop an email marketing strategy to generate leads and increase conversion rates for a tractor company. Use personalized messaging and automated workflows.

Note that if AI is used in the drafting process, the author(s) are expected to disclose how. - "When a generative artificial intelligence (AI) model is used in the drafting of a manuscript for an APA publication, the use of AI must be disclosed in the methods section and cited." (Quote from APA policy on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in scholarly materials.)

APA Citation Example:

When given a follow-up prompt of “What is a more accurate representation?” the ChatGPT-generated text indicated that “different brain regions work together to support various cognitive processes” and “the functional specialization of different regions can change in response to experience and environmental factors” (OpenAI, 2023; see Appendix A for the full transcript).

Google's NotebookLM allows users to upload various documents including PDFs, Google Docs, text, websites, and even audio files. NotebookLM can analyze and summarize these documents into key topics, with a bulleted list of notes combining similar themes found in the uploaded documents. NotebookLM can then generate an overview, an Audio transcript, an FAQ, and quiz notes for the topic. The new interactive mode allows users to engage in real-time conversations with AI-generated podcast hosts.

All this to say NotebookLM offers some amazing capabilities to analyze documents you upload and presents many clever uses of that information.
