Altmetrics Tools

Altmetrics.com - proposes to measure article level metrics. It is used as an alternative to Journal Impact factors or h-factor.  It uses the aspects: Viewed, Discussed, Saved, Cited and Recommended.  To freely view the altmetrics impact of an article, download the bookmarklet. The Bookmarklet only works on PubMed, arXiv or pages containing a DOI with Google Scholar friendly citation metadata.Learn more about Altmetrics.  Altmetric scores for journals can be found in Cabell's.

Impact Story - An open-source, web-based tool that helps researchers explore and share the diverse impacts of all their research products--from traditional ones like journal articles, to emerging products like blog posts, datasets, and software. By helping researchers tell data-driven stories about their impacts, we're helping to build a new scholarly reward system that values and encourages web-native scholarship (from the publisher's website).

PLOS ALM - Article Level Metrics measures the impact of research. ALMs provide a suite of established metrics that measure the overall performance and reach of published research articles.

Plum Analytics - Delivers a more complete picture of research and answers questions about research impact for anyone including researchers, librarians, administrators, and funders. PlumX gathers metrics across five categories—usage, mentions, captures, social media and citations. Metrics are gathered around what Plum Analytics calls artifacts—more than just the journal articles that a researcher authors (from the publisher's website). Also available through our Ebsco databases.

Scholarometer - a social tool to facilitate citation analysis and help evaluate the impact of an author's publication. Scholarometer uses Google Scholar, which provides a comprehensive source of citation data across the sciences and social sciences.

EigenFactor - "Aims to use recent advances in network analysis and information theory to develop novel methods for evaluating the influence of scholarly periodicals and for mapping the structure of academic research. We are committed to broadly disseminating our research findings and technological developments, while respecting the confidentiality of the data sources we use" (eigenFACTOR.org).
 
h-index - is an index that attempts to measure both the productivity and impact of the published work of a scientist or scholar. An h-index of 10 means that, out of all papers published by an author, 10 of them have been cited at least 10 times.

The SCImago Journal & Country Rank - a portal that includes the journals and country scientific indicators developed from the information contained in the Scopus® database (Elsevier B.V.). These indicators can be used to assess and analyze scientific domains.

The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), initiated by the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) together with a group of editors and publishers of scholarly journals, recognizes the need to improve the ways in which the outputs of scientific research are evaluated.

MLA Guidelines for Evaluating Work in Digital Humanities and Digital Media

JCR - Journal Citation Reports is used by the Thomson-Reuters product Web of Science to indication the importance (impact) of specific journals.

  • Immediacy Index Factor - the average number of times an article is cited in the year it is published.
  • Impact Factor - The impact factor of a journal is a measure of the frequency with which the "average article" in a journal has been cited in a particular year or period. Usually the higher the impact factor, the better a journal is considered.
  • Journal Immediacy Index - indicates how quickly articles in a journal are cited.
  • Aggregated Immediacy Index - indicates how quickly articles in a subject category are cited.
